What is Alkaline Water?

Alkaline water is water which is neither acidic nor neutral according to a pH scale. It is rather alkaline.
Alkaline water, also referred as ionized water , has a pH of about 8, depending on the trademark or the apparatus used to alkalize it.

Alkaline water is mostly manufactured with the help of a faucet-based water ionizer and provides many health benefits.
First developed in Japan in the 1950s, water ionizers make use of an electrical charge to divide water into alkaline water (with a pH above 7.0) and acidic water (with a pH below 7.0). The higher the pH of the drinking water, the more effective it is at combating the damaging effects of acids in the body. Although water Ionizers are well known in Japan for a number of years, it is relatively new in Mauritius due to its cost.

Ionisation of water

A water ionizer such as the Bawell BW SM1, segregates water into alkaline and acidic forms. The process that is used to segregate water is known as electrolysis. When a source of water is deficient of mineral ions, such as distilled water, or has been filtered by reverse osmosis, minerals must be included to water for electrolysis to take place.
Alkaline water ionizer is an equipment that is intended to filter and ionize the water. Water being the elixir of life, the quality of water that is being consumed tops the priority. The process of electrolysis takes place in a chamber that is divided into two compartments called diaphragm or membrane. One compartment in the electrolysis chamber contains the positive electrode and the other side has the negative electrodes. The water is made to flow with a high ORP and the other with low ORP. The minerals in the water are rearranged according to the electrical charge.

The Process of Electrolysis:

a)    Water ionizers run water which has already been filtered to remove contaminants over positive and negative electrodes.
b)    The electrodes ionize the water, negatively and positively, creating acidic and alkaline water at the same time.
c)    Acidic water is shunted into one chamber while alkaline water is shunted into another.


d)    Water molecules typically cluster in groups of 11 to 16 molecules.
e)    Water ionizers break large water molecule clusters apart, creating smaller clusters of 5 to 6 molecules.
f)    Smaller clusters of water molecules are more easily absorbed at the cellular level, improving hydration and detoxification, as well as improving the delivery of nutrients at a cellular level.
